Literacy & English Language Arts

Teachers design balanced literacy classrooms that promote enjoyment, skill and understanding of the processes of reading and writing.  Curricular units are designed around the ‘best practices’ of Lucy Calkins.

The Reading & Writing Project

Lucy Calkins and her Teachers College Reading and Writing Project coauthors have drawn on their more than 30 years of research and hands on work to support teachers. The Reading and Writing Project’s approach to instruction recognizes that “one size fits all” does not match the realities of the classrooms and schools in which they work.

Reading and writing workshops are deliberately designed to offer a simple and predictable environment so that the teacher can focus on the complex work of observing students' progress and teaching into their needs. To learn more about the workshop by visiting the TCRWP website

Students in grades 5th-8th also work with ThinkCERCA to develop writing skills. For students to succeed in today’s ever-changing world, they need to be able to evaluate and synthesize information as well as construct and communicate their thoughts effectively.  For more information about ThinkCERCA, visit their website
